The Central Carolina Convalescent Hospital represented both pride and pain. In 1948, the community responded to the polio epidemic by raising funds for a hospital, coming together in a time of crisis. But in the shadow of this accomplishment lay memories of disease and trauma. After the hospital closed, it served as a detention center for civil rights protesters in the 1960s.

This website explores the history of the polio hospital and also studies the other functions of the site. This project became one grounded greater in place than time, which has led to the discovery of multiple parts of Greensboro’s history. Through this website, we commemorate this seemingly forgotten site, which has served numerous purposes in the community.
